A lengthy court battle between the Environment Department and the South African Predator Breeders Association has finally come to an end.
The Bloemfontein High Court has dismissed the application launched on May 4, 2007, by the South African Predator Breeders Association, to include lion on the list as a predator that can be hunted.
“We welcome the decision of the High Court to dismiss the charges. It vindicates our position and it means that the practice of canned lion has been ended,” said spokesperson for the department, Albi Modise.
Modise said that once lion is re-listed as a large predator, the regulations specifically prohibit hunting large predators.
