Trade union SACCAWU says that Dis-Chem workers across the country are preparing to embark on a national strike.
The reason for the strike, according to spokesperson for the union, Themba Mahlangu, is because the pharmacy refuses to recognise SACCAWU as a representative union of workers at Dis-Chem.
SACCAWU says that about 50% of the pharmacy’s workers form part of its membership.
The strike would cause major inconvenience to Dis-Chem customers and will no doubt affect the pharmacy’s productivity.
“The strike will take place nationally – in all Dis-Chem branches,” said Mahlangu.
He said, “We intend to start on the 24th, but obviously we have to give notice and that should take place today.”
Mahlangu added that workers plan to meet at the weekend to finalise the arrangements.
