Mayor of Cape Town, Alderman Dan Plato, turned the first sod at the Watergate Development in Mitchells Plain today.
The development is the product of a partnership between the City’s Urban Renewal Programme and New Age Property Developers and will provide housing for 3 000 families. It will be developed over three years.
"Three thousand units is a significant number and will greatly assist people in need of a home of their own. The project does far more than just provide adequate housing - it will also provide employment, enhance skills development and create training opportunities for the communities of Mitchells Plain, Philippi and Khayelitsha" said Plato.
The development will consist of one to three bedroomed units, single and double storey.
It will make affordable and attractive "gap" market housing a reality for many people earning between R3 500 and R10 000 per month.
The development will also consist of a mini shopping centre, quality public open spaces and recreational facilities.
