President Jacob Zuma and Safety and Security Minister Nathi Mthethwa will kick start the selection process of a new permanent national police commissioner this week.
Tim Williams acted as Commissioner during Selebi’s special leave, pending his case on allegations of corruption and defeating the ends of justice.
Hangwani Malaudzi, spokesperson for Mthethwa said it would be unsafe to assume that Selebi’s contract would not be renewed.
According to a press release, Selebi’s lawyer was not available to confirm what action he would take regarding the expiry of Selebi’s contract, or whether he would insist on renewal until the final outcome of the case.
