The National Department of Transport and the City of Cape Town are working with taxi organisations to address their concerns about the Integrated Rapid Transit System.
The national Department of Transport and the city met yesterday with representatives of the Western Cape National Taxi Alliance over issues affecting the mini-bus taxi industry.
This meeting comes after many meetings between the City and the Mayor with the WC-NTA, where the City has sought to address the concerns of the WC-NTA, while also taking into consideration the interests of the broader minibus-taxi industry and the public.
Transport deputy director-general George Mahlalea said after the meeting that they don’t only want to create a safe, reliable and accessible public transport system, but also a prosperous environment for public transport service providers.
Spokesperson for the city Kylie Hatton says among other issues addressed at the meeting was matters of concern in whole taxi industry.
“The meeting amongst other things also addressed issues around permits for taxi owners and the illegal conversions panel vans into public transport as well as warrant issued to taxi operators were discussed,” said Hatton.
Hatton says the national department of transport committed itself to addressing the concerns raised and reporting back to the taxi industry.
