The Department of Police is considering reintroducing the Child Protection and Sexual Offences Units after they were transferred to local police stations in 2006.
Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa said the closure of these units had led to debate regarding the need for certain types of crimes to be addressed by people with specialised knowledge and experience.
Minister Mthethwa said today, the move to reintroduce the units was part of efforts to deal with crimes perpetrated against women and children.
The Minister is quoted as saying “violence against women and children is still prevalent in South Africa and government has to respond to the situation effectively”.
