The South African Maritime Safety Authority says more than 340 tons of fuel has already been pumped from the Turkish vessel, Seli 1, which is grounded in Cape Town.
This means that another 150 tons must still be removed to prevent serious oil pollution.
The bulk carrier ran aground off Blouberg last Monday and environmental authorities as well as salvers are working around the clock to remove fuel from the badly damaged vessel.
