Cape Town jazz legend Winston Monwabisi "Mankunku" Ngozi has died of heart attack in hospital this morning.
Ngozi suffered from the heart failure for a long time and he had been in many hospitals around Cape Town.
"Mankunku" as he was known by his friends, was a legend in his own time, and his name evoked powerful musical images not only for close followers of South African township jazz, but for music lovers all over Southern Africa.
In contrast to many colleagues who left the country to further their careers overseas "Mankunku" chose to remain in his native Cape Town.
Western Cape Music Association has been saddened by his passing.
General Manager William Razant says his passing has left an opening in the local jazz music and he will solely be missed as he was a remarkable artist.
“Winston was a remarkable musician who started playing piano at the age of seven at and he had never look back,” said Razant.
He died at the age of 66
