The Western Cape government has expressed grave concern over the deteriorating state and problems with access to Robben Island.

At its first meeting today, the Premier’s Metropolitan Co-ordination Forum said conditions on the island, which is under the jurisdiction of the National Department of Arts and Culture, were rapidly deteriorating.

The meeting noted that if the poor management of Robben Island is allowed to continue, thousand of visitors to the City will be hugely disappointed when they arrive for the World Cup next year.

As it is, the island is in danger of losing its status as a World Heritage Site.
