The National Sea Rescue Institute, many coastal management bodies and members of the public were involved in attempting to save two stranded whales along the Western Cape coast yesterday.
Mossel Bay station commander Dawie Zwiegelaar says dozens of people were involved in attempting to save an eight metre humpback whale that had beached at Kleinbrak.
Despite all the efforts, the animal did not survive.
In the other incident, a young killer whale was returned to the water after beaching at Milnerton Beach near Cape Town.
However the animal keeps swimming into shallow water.
It appears to have an injury to its head.
