The National Sea Rescue Institute’s Strandfontein volunteer duty crew was alerted of a reported drowning at Strandfontein Beach yesterday.

On arrival at the scene, NSRI Strandfontein launched their Discovery Rescue Runner and NSRI rescue swimmers were deployed into the surf-line in search of a 20 year old Guguletu man who had reportedly gone missing in the surf while swimming with friends early that morning.

“An extensive search has revealed no sign of the man who is missing and who is presumed to have drowned,” said NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon.

Lifeguards and Law Enforcement officers are assisting with the on-going search operation.

“It appears that the missing man was part of a group of friends who had arrived at the beach in the early hours of the morning celebrating a friends birthday and they had decided to go for a swim when the missing man reportedly got into difficulties in the 1 to 2 metre surf,” said Lambinon.

Poor water visibility and surface foam brought in by the South Easterly wind is hampering the ongoing search operation.
