President Jacob Zuma has called on the Pan African Parliament to urgently move to strengthen peace, development, democracy and economic growth in Africa.

Speaking at the opening of the Pan African Parliament’s First Ordinary Session in Johannesburg today, Zuma urged the Parliament’s members to demonstrate that they are not merely a forum for debate, but an institution that forms an essential part of the renewal of the continent.

He said much had been achieved in the last few years, but Africans remained among the poorest in the world.
