The City of Cape Town says they have approved the earlier than normal launch of the City annual readiness plan for people who are living on the street.

Mayoral Committee member Councillor Grant Pascoe says winter is a particularly harsh time for street people.

“We hope that the earlier launch will help us deal with the expected increased numbers of homeless people in the City Bowl over the World Cup period.”

The programme will again offer homeless people food and a place to sleep.

Participants will also be kept occupied through a series of activities and life skill training programmes, with a view to reintegrating them back into the communities where they come from.

Pascoe added that the City will seek to partner with Non-Governmental Organisations who are experts in the field of taking care of- and rehabilitating homeless people. The programme will cost R500 000-00 and will be rolled out right across the city.
