The Eastern Cape Health Department is rescuing circumcision school initiates in the Port St Johns area following the deaths of 11 boys during May and June.
Spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo says 110 initiates have already been removed and 50 initiation schools have been closed to prevent more injuries and deaths during the rite of passage.
Forty-five boys have been admitted to hospital for treatment.
Kupelo blames carelessness, alcohol and drugs and circumcisions carried out by boys younger than 12 for the abuses.
