A helicopter crash just outside Witbank in Mpumalanga was reported earlier today and police have confirmed reports stating that this was on of their helicopters.
The aircraft was carrying seven people, five of whom were from the police’s National Intervention Unit.
Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa and National Police Commissioner General Bheki Cele went to the scene to determine what caused the crash.
ER24’s Werner Vermaak said all the occupants were already dead when paramedics arrived at the crash site and the aircraft was burnt beyond because recognition.
The group was on its way back from an armed robbery at the Nedbank Centre in Klarinet where they had apprehended seven suspects.
The helicopter is believed to have hit power lines, resulting in the crash.
