Lusanda Bill
30 July 2010
Today the four former University of Free State students known as the Reitz appeared in the Bloemfontein Magistrate court, for their sentencing.
The judge made his decision today and sentenced the four students to a fine of R20 000 each or 12 months imprisonment.
The four students who are RC Malherbe, Johnny Roberts, Schalk van der Merwe and Danie Grobler pleaded guilty on Tuesday when they appeared in court.
The charges of the students are humiliating five black workers in an initiation ceremony, which they filmed the whole incident at the Free State University men’s residence.
The Reitz men’s residence has since being closed by the state.
Counsel Christo Dippenaar has asked the court for the students to pay off their fine over a certain period. A decision has not been made yet because the court has been adjourned so that the State and defence could consult.
