On Friday Somerset West police responded to a burglary in progress complaint at Steen Street in Somerset West.
Police found an unidentified male, lying outside the yard with a gunshot wound to his chest.
The 72 year old complainant said: "He heard his dogs bark and went to investigate. He noticed an unidentified man hiding in his store room. "
Police say the complainant who was in possession of a torch and a firearm was attacked by the suspect. A scuffle ensued and a shot went off.
The suspect fled the scene and he collapsed in the street. The unidentified man was later declared dead.
Police opened an inquest docket and no arrest was made.
