Four of the five Solidarity members who operated Murray & Roberts’ Strata 950 drill during the rescue effort to free 33 trapped Chilean mineworkers received the trade union’s Stars in the Community award at the OR Tambo International Airport this morning.
Riaan Viviers, Wynand Botes, Johan Badenhorst and Mario Scholtz arrived from Buenos Aires.
Christo Esterhuizen will also receive an award when he comes home later.
The Murray & Roberts team drilled the circulation tunnels that were used to send food, water and other supplies down to the miners.
Solidarity’s Deputy General secretary Derrick Hermann says, the Solidarity member’s achievement was like a world cup, the difference is that their prize was 33 Chilean miner’s lives.
