The Home Affairs department says refugees and those granted asylum will soon be able to open South African bank accounts.
According to Home Affairs Director General Mkuseli Apleni, the granting of bank accounts was in line with international standards and conventions.
As per the Financial Intelligence Centre Act people are required to have green bar-coded identity documents and refugees and those who have been granted asylum not to be issued with ID books.
The FIC hopes to inform banks in due course to ensure a smooth roll out.
Banks would be expected to work closely with home affairs to confirm the permits which were issued to refugees and those granted asylum.
Meanwhile, only section 22 and section 24 permit holders can apply for bank accounts.
