South Africa’s festive season death toll on its roads reached a total of 1 551 between December 1 and January 5.
Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele said, “About 1 582 died in the previous year.”
This figures means that 1 000 people are killed every month in the country.
Ndebele said that 20 people were killed in New Zealand on the country's roads each month compared to South Africa.
He furthermore urged drivers to change their behaviour to help reduce deaths on the country's roads.
