A fire-fighter has lost his life while helping with search and rescue operations in Gauteng’s Midrand.
The 42-year-old man’s canoe apparently overturned while he and a colleague were patrolling flood waters.
He was airlifted to hospital for treatment but paramedics were not able to save him.
The Jukskei and Hennops Rivers broke their banks late last night, causing heavy flooding in the area.
Meanwhile, residents near the Orange River in the Northern Cape are waiting to hear if they are allowed to return to their homes.
At least 400 families were evacuated when water levels on the river rose and flooded nearby farms last week.
