The Hawks say the French couple who died in the Karoo last week will be buried as paupers in South Africa.
Spokesperson McIntosh Polela says the French embassy will not take responsibility for the burial.
Philippe Menière and Agnes Jardel died in a shootout with police last week after being on the run for six days.
They were being sought for allegedly shooting dead student Constable Jacob Boleme and wounding Warrant Officer Glenwell du Toit.
