The national truck drivers’ strike is turning increasingly violent. Gauteng police have arrested at least 30 strikers who allegedly set two trucks alight in Irene this morning.

A commuter was also robbed and beaten at the Irene railway station in Centurion, allegedly by striking workers.

In Mpumalanga, two truck drivers are in hospital after being forced off the road and being assaulted with pangas and sticks. And in Ekurhuleni in Gauteng, a 55-year-old man is recovering after he was attacked in his freight truck.

The rail freight unions now say they will accept a nine-percent increase over each of the next two years.

They initially demanded 10-percent. The Road Freight Employers’ Association has upped its offer to eight-percent for the two years, with cash-in-transit guards being offered nine-percent.
