Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi has warned of a national strike before the end of the year.
Vavi made the announcement at the end of the four-day Cosatu central committee meeting in Midrand. Cosatu warned the ANC that it had to implement the policies of the 2008 Polokwane Conference and the 2009 general election.
A draft resolution issued at the end of the meeting instructed government to pull up its socks.
Meanwhile, unions in the metal and engineering sectors may embark on a strike should a wage agreement not be reached soon. Negotiations deadlocked earlier this week.
Unions are demanding an increase of 10-percent as part of a one-year wage agreement. Employers are however sticking to seven-percent.
