A pilot project aimed at allowing shack dwellers to help stop the spread of fires has been launched at the Joe Slovo informal settlement in Cape Town on Thursday.
Since the beginning of December more than a hundred people have lost their lives in shack fires in the city.
On Thursday, residents received a thousand portable fire extinguishers from Mayor of Cape Town Patricia De Lille.
The mayor urged people to be safe when working with fires and electrical appliances.
