City of Cape Town officials are almost finished with talks on tolling with national government and the South African National Roads Agency SANRAL.

The dispute was declared after the City warned that tolling on the N1 and N2 would affect residents living on the outskirts of the city devastatingly.

The City’s Brett Herron said they were hoping they could prevent what was happening in Gauteng where protests were planned against government’s decision to go ahead and charge motorist for the e-tags.

He added that they are still of view but that the extra capacity is not needed.

Herron said that the council’s consultants pointed out this was not necessary.
