It could not be confirmed by the Western Cape Fisheries department whether a possible red tide along the west coast could stop the collecting of shellfish.
The department has been noticing the development since last week.
A red tide is referred to as a reddish or brownish colouration of water.
It is caused by the rapid reproduction of a variety of toxic single-celled organism.
