The green bar-coded South African Identity Document will soon be replaced with smart cards.

Home Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma says that the smart cards will probably be introduced in six months time.

Dlamini-Zuma says that the cards will root-out corruption in her department.

Dlamini-Zuma says the identity document is too easy to forge and interfere with-that is the main reason her department has been having problems.

Dlamini-Zuma added that the smart card will be linked to the department’s system which contains all the population data.
