At least 34 boys in the Eastern Cape and four in the Free State have died as a result of botched circumcisions at the start of this year’s initiation season.
The National Union of Metalworkers and the National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union have come out strongly against illegal initiation schools.
Numsa’s Phumzile Nodongwe says health departments must ensure that those performing circumcisions are qualified and not just trying to make money.
Nodongwe added that families should hire people who are familiar with the traditional work of circumcision.
