The National Research Foundation on Friday said the creation of a dedicated cancer treatment centre in Cape Town would transform the local healthcare system.

NRF CEO Albert van Jaarsveld said that by investing in a new machine for its iThemba Laboratory, many patients with cancerous tumours would be able to take advantage of its neutron and proton therapy.

The National Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi at a research facility in Cape Town said the public health care system has to prepare for an explosion of non-communicable diseases like cancer.

The NRF which runs the laboratory has requested funding for a more modern particle accelerator.
