The DA said they discovered thousands of destroyed textbooks in Fort Beaufort in the Eastern Cape at an Education Department district.

Provincial DA Education spokesperson Edmund van Vuuren said they found thousands of textbooks lying burnt in and around the premises.

Most of the textbooks were mathematics.

Van Vuuren said the destruction of the textbooks raise serious questions in the province suffering from a massive textbook shortage.

He added that they don’t know how the fire started but their biggest concern is that there are textbooks in the storeroom when there is a 40% shortage of textbooks within the province.
