In the early hours of Sunday morning a fire occurred at Mandela Park Informal Settlement in Hout Bay.
Disaster Risk Managements Wilfred Solomons-Johannes said approximately 50 shacks were burnt to the ground.
He added that about 200 people were left displaced.
Disaster teams were sent to the scene to asses the extent of the destruction that the fire has caused.
Solomons-Johannes said it is believed that a 39-year-old man has died in the fire.
Family members of the man suspect he went back to bed after being under the influence of alcohol, which caused the fire in the area.
Solomons-Johannes said police has since opened an inquest docket into the matter and they are currently investigating the incident.
