The Hawks are investigating claims that some rhino owners may be killing and dehorning their own animals for profit.

Spokesperson McIntosh Polela is quoted as saying the probe is at an early stage.

It is alleged that the guilty game farm and reserve owners claim to be victims of poaching.

The theory is that the rhino owners may have realised that selling horns is more profitable than keeping the animals.
