The Western Cape Premier Helen Zille wrote a letter to President Jacob Zuma requesting to have the National Defence Force brought in to curb gang violence on the Cape Flats.
Zille`s request brought different views, some people say it shows a lack of faith in the police.
The Institute for Security Studies’ Senior Researcher Johan Burger says the army should be a last resort and more police members should rather be called in from other provinces to apprehend the drug lords.
Burger also said that deploying police from other provinces could be a solution.
South African Military Analyst Helmoed Heitman says the SA Defence Force is not trained for this sort of policing work.
He added that soldiers can not help in curbing crime operations.
