The SA Agulhas 2 will be embarking on a 26-day shakedown cruise to the ice shelf in Antarctica on Monday.
A group of marine scientists from the Department of Environmental Affairs, South African Weather Service and a number of SA universities will be taking part in the trip.
Spokesperson Zolile Nqayi says the purpose of the cruise is to train researchers and test the ship’s new equipment in icy condition.
Nqayi also says some of the vessel test will be done in Europe.
He added that the trip is a shakedown because it is just to test all the equipment for now and this is necessary as the ship is still new and it will be operative for the next three decades.
