The Western Cape Transport Department said its Safely Home Campaign reduced road fatalities by nearly 30 percent over the past three and a half years.

Regular roadblocks and alcohol blitzes are just some techniques used by authorities.

More than 1,700 people were killed on the province's roads in 2008, compared to a little over 1,300 in 2011.

Western Cape Transport MEC Robin Carlisle said the figures showed that their hard work was paying off.

He said that over 1000 people are alive because of the campaign.
