Schoolboy rugby players in previously disadvantaged areas will have access to scientific training methods and gym facilities.

This is thanks to the Schools Excellence Programme launched by the South African Rugby Union this weekend.

Saru spokesperson Rayaan Adriaanse says the programme will initially be rolled out to 20 schools in the Western and Eastern Cape, Boland, Border and South-Western Districts.

He says they want to close the gap with traditional rugby playing schools
