The South African Navy has launched an inquiry to investigate an accident involving one of the country's attack submarines.

Last week, a submarine struck the ocean floor while conducting a training exercise between Durban and Port Elizabeth.

The German-built vessel is in Simon’s Town undergoing repairs at the naval base.

Two other submarines,  are undergoing routine maintenance.

More than R35 million has already been spent on maintenance, excluding the most recent accident.

The submarines were purchased during the controversial multi-million rand arms deal.
