The Western Cape MEC of Transport Robin Carlisle said that close to 18 000 people die on South African roads every year.

Through the Safely Home campaign the department continues to target road safety, with an aim of reducing road deaths in the province by 50 percent by 2014.

Department Spokesperson Siphesihle Dube said there is a prevalence of pedestrian deaths.

Dube also said that the statistics are very alarming, saying that restraints are ignored in the country as a whole.
