The MEC of Transport and Public Works Robin Carlise committed in 2009 to reducing the provincial road traffic fatalities by 50 percent.

Through initiatives like the Safely Home Campaign there has been a decline in road deaths in recent months.

Spokesperson Siphesihle Dube said they’ve seen a decrease of the figures with each passing month.

In 2008 the number for people killed on the road were 1 739 a year compared to the latest number at 707 for this year.
