Concern over illegal fishing

The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries has expressed their concern about the fact that fishers are fishing in areas were they do not issue permits.

Spokesperson for the department, Lionel Adenhof confirmed the men who are missing and drowned were fishermen and said they regretted the incident.

Following an investigation of the matter Adendorf said that the boat did not comply with basic South African Maritime Safety Authoruty requirements.

He added that no fishing permits was issued to anyone fishing in the Botriver estuary, one of the top 10 nursery areas for a variety of fish.
