Several families have been left without shelter at the George Koch informal settlement in Johannesburg after seven shacks burnt down.

A spokesperson for the Johannesburg Emergency Services says no one was injured in the blaze but the shack dwellers who were affected face dreadful conditions in the rain and cold.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

Officials were hard at work this morning trying to find suitable accommodation for the homeless. .
