Mineral Resources Minister Susan Shabangu today briefed the media on the soon to be released government hydraulic fracturing investigation report.
The suspension on fracking in the Karoo was lifted on Friday and has met with some public resistance.
The minister explained that for now only normal exploration will be allowed in order to establish the extent of gas deposits in the Karoo.
No actual hydraulic fracturing will occur until a regulatory framework is established which is expected to take six to 12 months.
