The situation remains tense in Marikana after the deployment of soldiers in the area.

On Saturday Police fired rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse a group of about a hundred protestors who had gathered near the town. Police raided hostels and confiscated weapons from the demonstrators.

Some residents of the Nkaneng informal settlement in Wonderkop, Marikana complain that police have used live ammunition against them.

Police say they only used rubber bullets and tear gas to break up illegal gatherings.

The National Defence Force has stressed that its deployment of a thousand soldiers in Marikana is in support of the police operation in North West.

Defence Spokesperson Xolani Mabanga said the deployment includes members of the army, the air force and the military health services.
