The City of Cape Town's Metro Police Department has experienced a tenfold increase in arrests since it started carrying out daily operations to target drugs and gangsterism in the city's drug-ravaged communities.

Alderman JP Smith, Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, says the Metro Police's Drug Buster Unit carries out raids every day as part of its ‘disruptive’ policing strategy.

Over the last weekend, a number of properties in areas such as Manenberg, Hanover Park and Lavender Hill were raided, and there will continue to be daily blitzes in such areas.

At least 44 suspects were arrested during crime prevention patrols and roadblocks, including a number of drug-related offences.
