An avian influenza outbreak has had ostrich farmers in South Africa worried.

Western Cape Agriculture MEC Gerrit van Rensburg said that ostriches could soon become a threatened species in the country if disease problems are not treated soon.

Gerrit Van Rensburg’s Spokesperson Wouter Kriel said that the National Department of Agriculture needs to come up with alternative control measures for managing the outbreaks.

Kriel added that it is worrying and this may lead to a meeting with ostrich farmers to discuss possible treatment measures.
