The Western Cape Department of Transport and Public Works says the R44 Road between Somerset West and Stellenbosch is a high speed mobility route which carries significant volumes of traffic daily.

In recent years, the increased traffic volumes have resulted in the growth of safety and capacity shortcomings along the route.

Department Spokesperson Siphesihle Dube said this road has been identified as one of the busiest roads in the province.

Dube said the department has decided to upgrade the road, to increase safety measures.
