Earlier today two people in the Malawi Camp near Elsies River were killed by smoke inhalation after their shack caught fire.

Reports say they struggled to open the security gate in an attempt to escape the blaze.

Witnesses say a child survived because one of the victims was able to bend the security gate wide enough to enable the child to scramble to safety.

Spokesperson for the Fire and Rescue Department, Theo Lane said they are still investigating what caused the fire.
