Tygerberg Hospital opens new haematology unit

A new Haematology Unit at Tygerberg Hospital was opened today.

It is the second of its kind in the Western Cape.

The unit receives patients from a variety of hospitals including Worcester, Paarl and Helderberg.

The unit cares for between 20 to 25 patients with serious haematological disorders.

In 2011 Tygerberg Hospital had around 410 new referrals, administered chemotherapy to 1741 patients and attended to 5500 outpatients.

Spokesperson for Tygerberg Hospital Leticia Pienaar said the unit cost R1.7 million.

This unit will be staffed by highly skilled staff, and will host and give specialised care to patients with haematology disorders” she added.
