Equal Education and the Minister of Basic Education have reached an out of court settlement that could benefit thousands of school learners.

Minister Angie Motshekga agreed to spread minimum norms and standards for school infrastructure as ordered by Equal Education.

Equal Education Chairperson Yoliswa Dwane said according to the agreement the norms and standards will be published for public comment by 15 January 2013, and finalised by 15 May 2013.

Dwane also said the norms and standards are a regulation that the Minister is empowered to make by Section5A of the South African Schools Act.

Among other things which need to be included in the Norms and Standards include the availability of classrooms, electricity and a Library.
